The Supermarket Trap

Often when I’m out in the supermarket doing some grocery shopping I found myself walking home with a lot more than I planned on buying in the first place. Here are a few tips on how to avoid such things.

* Keep a list at home of things you are going to purchase and stick to it while in the store.
* Don’t give in for stuff like buy 2 get 1 for free kind of deals, if you just need one. However if it’s a product you know you use a lot, and it doesn’t go bad until you do, it might be a good idea to stock up a few.
* Same goes for fresh food that come in big packages, like 2 kg of carrots etc. You have to ask yourself the question if you’re really going to need it, maybe it’s more likely it’ll only grow mold in your fridge until you realize you could’ve done something with it. If you only need one or two right now, then that’s all you’re buying.
* Don’t buy food while being hungry. Also, if you have a sweet tooth satisfy your need of sugar as well as your empty stomach. The odds are you’ll spend more otherwise since in every supermarket you probably have to pass your favorite chocolate bar in order to get to the cash registers.
* Pay in cash. For some reason, it doesn’t feel like real money if you pay with a credit/debit card.
* If the price of a thing on your list is too expensive, don’t buy it. You can probably get it cheaper somewhere else.
* If you only need what you can carry in your hand, don’t take a shopping cart or a basket. Walk faster than normal to pick up the thing you need, go straight to the cash registers and don’t look around. If you can’t see the offers that lure you, they’re easier to avoid.
